Thousands of years old, the lunar calendar measures time based on the cycles of the moon. Influential in the decisions and beliefs of millions of adherents over time, it is associated with many myths and legends.
According to one of the most popular stories, the Chinese Emperor decreed that all 12 years in a complete lunar cycle would be overseen by an auspicious zodiac animal. A race for the honor of representing the first year was won by the mouse, which was followed by the ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.
As well as bestowing their distinctive character traits and affinities, these animals were said to exert a powerful influence on the lives of people born under their rule.
